Raising your body's pH levels is part of natural gout treatment. The theory is, supported by studies, that higher body pH levels (more alkaline) contribute to a reduction in uric acid levels because uric acid (diluted from drinking lots of water) becomes more soluble if the body is more alkaline. The higher the acid/alkaline ratio i.e. the higher the pH number on the pH scale, the more alkaline your body, and the more uric acid you should dissolve.

What does pH stand for? Is it personal hygiene? Or proper health? Or possibly hydrated? Well no. It actually stands for the power of hydrogen. But without going deeper into biochemistry, gout sufferers just need to know that raising body pH levels makes the body more alkaline, and lowering them, more acidic.

How many Amercians suffer from chronic symptoms of arthritis? 40 million! Are there several forms of arthritis? Yes, there are more than one hundred forms of arthritis and the causes of many are unclear. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis (commonly referred to as simply arthritis) and rheumatoid arthritis. Gout is a less common form of the disease.

As well as pH 0 food labels, neither the excellent USDA National Nutrient database, nor most cookery books and articles list pH values of foods and beverages. And it's not the word off the lips of celebrity chefs. But you can find the pH of foods and drinks on the Internet. One good list is at http://home.bluegrass.net/~jclark/alkaline_foods.htm which can be downloaded.

Since one of the objectives of drinking water is to raise body pH use pH test strips or litmus paper to discover and monitor your pH. Type "pH test strips" or "pH test stix" into an Internet search box to find online suppliers. Make sure you follow the leaflet's instructions, and monitor results by looking for trend changes over time. One test doesn't cut it.

ACHIEVING A MORE ALKALINE BODY There are various ways to achieve a more alkaline body but probably the easiest is to drink alkaline (ionized) water which is water with excess oxygen in the form of OH-, not O2. It's described as being lively and much tastier than regular water, and you can cook with it. The manufacturers of a well known ionizer brand say food cooked with alkaline water is tastier.

Does arthritis affect more women than men? Rhemathoid arthritis is two to three times more common in women than men. Men, however, are at greater risk than women of developing gout.

What exactly is arthritis? The term arthritis literally means joint inflammation, but it also is used to refer to more than 100 rheumatic diseases. These diseases can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in joints and may also affect other parts of the body. Some common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and psoriatic arthritis.

Water has another beneficial effect. Drinking water generally has a pH of 7.0. At this pH level it has an alkaline effect on the body which is desirable in gout treatment since a more alkaline body is more likely to excrete uric acid. More water, other things being equal, is more likely to excrete uric acid.

So how do you use the pH potential of foods numbers? Firstly learn the extent to which a food or drink is acidic or is alkaline. Any number above pH 7.0 is considered alkaline, and below pH 7.0 acidic. Study for a while the pH tables you have downloaded and get a rough idea of the values of your most eaten foods. For an easy, more exact reference, put up a pH foods chart, or printed downloaded lists, on your kitchen wall as a reminder.

USING pH VALUES IN DIET PLANNING Most natural gout treatment involves a diet. Firstly, to reach your ideal weight if required, as it probably will be for most gout sufferers. Secondly, to assist the uric acid reduction process. The low purine gout diet, and any diet which has a positive effect on insulin resistance, are two useful diets in natural gout treatment. Dieting is hard work but most gout sufferers will not achieve a natural gout cure without diet.

When does arthritis appear? Rheumatoid arthritis -- one of the many forms of arthritis -- typically begins at 20 to 50 years of age, although it can develop in childhood.

Record the time and value of all your pH measurements and ensure you follow the test strip manufacturer's usage instructions exactly. Don't overdo it. Just as a highly acidic body can suffer from acidosis, an over alkaline body can suffer from alkalosis, which causes muscle cramps and spasms among other problems.

What can you count as water, apart from "pure" water? The usual includes are tea, juices and milk. Regular coffee? Probably not because of its caffeine. Caffeine, as many people know, acts as a diuretic. That is, it draws water out of cells. But decaffeinated coffee has scarcely any caffeine.

" Cherry juice concentrate is a highly concentrate way to get the pain relieving property of the tart cherry. It takes approximately 100 cherries to make just one ounce of tart cherry juice. A reliable source for tart cherry juice concentrate is Traverse Bay Farms http://www.traversebayfarms.com

Juices count too and are helpful for gout sufferers if they are made from fruits with high amounts of flavonoid antioxidants. Cherry juice for gout is the most widely touted. But berries such as strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are also very high in flavonoid antioxidants and contain useful amounts of vitamin C, which some studies have shown can reduce uric acid levels.

Remember too, that there are other ways of raising pH, notably drinking alkaline (ionized) water. Drinking lots of regular water daily also raises pH. So too do alkalizing minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc. Make your pH rise and your uric acid levels should fall. Ensure that your body is not acidic.

Stage #1: Higher levels of uric acid begin to form. This first stage is called Asymptomatic Hyperuricemia. In this stage, you will probably not feel any symptoms. Catching the gout at this stage is vital so you don't experience the pain of the gout.

What kind of cause can trigger arthritis? While genes appear to be a contributing factor to arthritis, there are other causes. Researchers believe that environmental agents -- a virus, or even stress, can trigger the disease in people who are genetically predisposed to it.

NB. The contents of this article contain medical information not medical advice. Please always discuss remedies with your doctor or other health care professional before implementing any treatment.

Stage #4: This is the final stage of gout and it is called chronic gout. This stage can cause permanent damage to the joints and kidney, too. Eating Right Can Stop the Gout.

Here is a brief list of foods that are high in purines and should be avoided since high purine food contributes to the gout. These foods include alcohol, seafood, beans, scallops, and sweetbread.

" Tart cherry capsules are made with tart cherry powder. The tart cherry powder is made using the freeze-dried process. The freeze dried process uses low heat and low temperature, thus maintaining 100% of the phytochemicals of the tart cherry. A good source of tart cherry capsules is Fruit Advantage http://www.fruitadvantage.com

If you reduce your uric acid levels to below 6.0 mg/dL (men), slightly less in women, it is more likely that the troublesome MSU crystals will dissolve and a gout cure will be achieved.

Keep this natural gout treatment simple. Instead of two simultaneous diets, exclude some acidic foods especially if they are ones you consume a lot. But continue with your primary gout diet plan. Only exclude more acidic foods, if your body pH levels are not rising above pH 7.0 after testing with pH test strips for a considerable time and at different times of day. (The body's pH numbers change frequently. perhaps even minute by minute).

For example one fruit that has a proven track record in fighting gout pain is the tart cherry. Tart cherries have been proven by medical research universities to help fight gout pain. The benefit of the tart cherry is this little fruit is available is a variety of options including tart cherry juice and tart cherry capsules. Here is a brief overview of the different ways to fight gout with tart cherries:

Stage #2: The gout starts to harm the body. This second stage is called acute gouty arthritis or acute gout. This is the stage that jagged crystal-like formations begin to deposit themselves in joint spaces. This is also the stage when redness, pain and swelling occurs.

Stage #3: This stage is Intercritical gout. This is when an gout attack has subsided. This is the stage the body begins to stabilize itself and fights the uric acid crystals in the joints. Getting treatment is vital at this stage if the individual wants to control the gout.

Hence the exhortations for gout sufferers to drink water. At least 8 - 12 x 8fl.oz glasses a day, perhaps more. Twelve glasses of water is about twice the recommended daily amount for healthy people. Some people would find this daunting. But it doesn't all have to be "pure" water.

If you don't want to take medication, due to possible and serious side effects, you have another alternative that can be better then medication - eating the right food.

THE pH SCALE The pH scale ranges from 14 (most alkaline) down to 0 (most acidic). pH of 7 is neutral. It is a logarithmic scale. On this scale, as on pH test strips scales, a single whole number change (whether up or down) means a change of 10 times the previous number. So small number changes on this scale in fact mean very significant differences between the alkalinity and acidity of different foods.

Another route is via eating more alkaline foods and drinking alkaline beverages. There is a silence on food and beverage product nutrition labels. They do not show the pH values of the product, but foods and beverages have a pH value.

Tea is probably better than coffee for gout sufferers. The USDA National Nutrient database shows that tea has less caffeine and that it contains far more beneficial flavonoid antioxidants than does coffee. Black or green. But to get the most antioxidants make your own teapot tea, or with a teabag, and not drink instant versions.

You probably already know gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. However, did you know that four stages of gout exist and each stage has very unique characteristics of this painful infliction?

Water dilutes uric acid, an excess of which in the body is often, but not always, the immediate cause of gout. Diluted uric acid is more likely to be expelled from the body. If it is, the body's level of uric acid falls. And if uric acid levels fall to the clinical target of 6mg/dL in men, slightly less in women, the troublesome MSU crystals in the joints may dissolve, thus relieving a gout attack and preventing a recurrent one.

So a gout sufferer aiming for a natural gout cure is on a diet. He/she has to carefully consider everything eaten or drunk and maybe consider the pH of foods too. This is a very tall order. In effect they would be on two diets simultaneously.

"Miracle" foods for gout, such as cherries, celery and perhaps strawberries, (all have been reported to cure gout in some cases), will not work for everyone, probably only for a small minority. Neither will simple natural gout remedies such as avoiding alcohol, although this did work in one famous case in Japan.

Any drink with alcohol is out. Finally don't forget those foods which are laden with water. The highest water content foods are surprise, surprise, watermelons and tomatoes. Both contain over 90% water. Watermelons are an alkaline food, but be aware that tomatoes may be low pH (i.e. acidic) and this makes eating them a source of debate among those who discuss the fine points of a gout diet. And eat soups and stews - it's water again.

Cow's milk is around 88% water. Not quite as much as a glass of water, but pretty close at the end of a twelve glass day. One study showed that milk proteins could reduce uric acid levels, another that dairy products lowered the risk of getting gout.

Eating right and selecting low purine foods can help you to manage gout pain and enjoy a painful life.
